Well, approximately 6600 of you were typing these very words into Google.com in January 2009. On a monthly basis or in terms of the average number of people searching for this phrase “teaching in korea” throughout the world, there are about 5400 of you who punch these words into the search field regularly. As a result, I felt the need for a blog that explores the phrase “teaching in korea” and the many opinions and views I can share about the job that I consider one of the best hidden secrets after college.

First, let’s analyze similar phrases as well that people use in order to find great resources on “teaching in korea.” A phrase very similar to teaching in korea is “teach english in korea.” It’s probably closer to what people in native English speaking countries are looking for in terms of the jobs they might find in South Korea, Japan and China. Approximately, half the number (3600 to be exact) searched for the phrase in January. Higher than that though are “jobs in korea” and “teach in korea.” The latter of these two phrases is second to “teaching in korea” at 5400 searches in January. “Jobs in korea” though has less searches this past January (4400), but this “jobs” related search phrase is equal in terms of average search volume over the course of history with “teaching in korea.”

Some lesser searched phrases where the amount searched are much less beyond these 4 other phrases above are:

jobs in south korea – 880

teach in south korea – 720

teach english in south korea – 590

teaching jobs in korea – 480

esl jobs in korea – 140

english teaching jobs in korea – 140

teach esl in korea – 91

(the number behind the phrase represents the number of times it was searched in January 2009; interesting note is that searches with higher averages failed to even have some inventory in January 2009 & so they were not included [for now]. I’ll included them at the bottom.)

Second, let’s analyze the trending of these phrases and “teaching in korea” over it’s history that google.com tracks. You can see from the following graph that as of 2008, the number of search queries have stablized for the most part and people are consistently looking for websites based off this search term:

teaching in korea

Most of the people are typing the phrase from South Korea according to Google Trends. Surprisingly for me, the second highest country to be searching for the phrase is not the United States or Canada which I believe represents the home country for the majority of the teachers of native English language in South Korea. It happens to be instead South Africa. Third place is not as surprising given the number of resumes I see from Filippino candidates at my company. New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Thailand, the United States and the United Kingdom round off the top 10. In terms of cities that rank highest in searching for “teaching in korea”, we have again South Korea as number 1 with Seoul. Instead of a South African city as #2, we have Halifax, Canada placing second. Auckland, New Zealand is 3rd, with Ottawa, CA, Toronto, CA, Vancouver, CA, Dublin, Ireland, Seattle, WA, USA, Sydney, Australia and Montreal, CA filling in the rest of the 10 highest searching cities for “teaching in korea.”

“Teach english in korea” has very little data in the Google Trends labs:

Teach english in korea

The”jobs in korea” search trends look very similar to the “teaching in korea” trends – don’t they?

teaching in korea

Finally, for our graphical pleasure today, we round off these trends with “teach in korea” which Google Labs appear to have less data on “teaching in korea” and “jobs in korea”, but definitely a bit more than “Teach english in korea.” I’m wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that four word keyword searches have been rising, but traditionally have been a lot less than 3 word searches as Matt McGee mentions here.

Phrases that failed to register enough inventory in January 2009 on Google’s Keyword (External) Tool are:

teach in korea summer

english jobs in korea
